Michael Chatziefstathiou

Education & career

I hold BSc in Ichthyology, MSc in Environmental Engineering, PhD in Environmental Policy & Management.

I work as Fisheries Expert for the Greek State, having my post at the Directorate General for Fisheries (Head of Dept. of CFP & CMO, Ministry of Rural Development & Food), and I am Research Associate of the Laboratory for Regional & Insular Development (University of Aegean).

I served as Special Adviser of the General Secretary for Aegean & Island Policy (10/2012 - 09/2013), helping to elaborate an Integrated Island Policy, and to implement Integrated Maritime Policy, and MSP. I was appointed Adviser on Fisheries of the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Islands & Fisheries, the Ministers of Development, Competitiveness & Shipping, and the Minister of Shipping & Aegean (09/2010 - 06/2013).

I have extensive working experience in research (Aquaculture Laboratory of HCMR), in technical consulting (self-employed), and training, in Greece (National Centre for Public Administration), and abroad (expert in Estonia, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey).

I am Chairing the Auditing Committee and the R&D Group of the Pan-Hellenic Society of Technologists Ichthyologist (previously elected PASTI’s President for 7 times).

Current teaching activities

Trainer,  in Greece (National Centre for Public Administration), and abroad (expert in Estonia, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey).

My main research is on the assessment of the contribution of marine aquaculture in the development of island areas.
