Michael Chatziefstathiou

Education & career

I hold BSc in Ichthyology, MSc in Environmental Engineering, PhD in Environmental Policy & Management.

My current post as a Senior Fisheries Policy Expert for the Greek State, is the Head of the Department of Common Fisheries Policy & Common Market Organisation (Greek Ministry of Rural Development & Food, Directorate General for Fisheries, Directorate of Fisheries Policy & Development of Fishery Products), and, Research Associate of the Laboratory for Regional & Insular Development (University of Aegean). Until July 2021 I was the National Correspondent for Fisheries Data Collection, and Teaching Assistant at the Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (University of Thessaly).

I served as Adviser on Fisheries of the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Islands & Fisheries, the Minister of Development, Competitiveness & Shipping, and the Minister of Shipping, Maritime Affairs & Aegean (September 2010 - June 2013), having also served as Special Adviser of the General Secretary for Aegean & Island Policy (September 2012 - September 2013), helping at the elaboration of the Integrated Island Policy and the implementation of the EU’s Integrated Maritime Policy, and MSP on island regions.

I have extensive working experience in research, technical consulting, and training, having worked for several years at the Aquaculture Laboratory of the National Center for Marine Research, the Laboratory for Local & Island Development of the University of Aegean, as a self-employed consultant, and, trainer in Greece (National Center for Public Administration), and abroad (having missions as EU expert in Estonia, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, etc.).

I am Treasurer of the Pan-Hellenic Society of Technologists Ichthyologists, leading also its R&D Group, and was its President for 7 consecutive times, and Chairman of its Auditing Committee for 4 times.

Current teaching activities
Guest Lecturer at the Postgraduate Course "Mediterranean Aquaculture" (Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly), for lectures in the thematic "Fish farming & types of production" on "Climate Change and Aquaculture" and "Sustainability Assessment of Marine Fish Farms".
 
Guest Lecturer at the Postgraduate Course "Sustainable Fisheries, Aquaculture" (Department of Animal Production, Fisheries & Aquaculture, University of Patras), for lectures in the thematic "Fisheries and Environment" on "Structure of Greek and European Legislation (Common Fisheries Policy, Third Countries, Spatio-temporal fishing gear bans)" and "Development of methods to investigate trends and patterns of consumption of fishery products. Life Cycles of Fishery Products (Life Cycle Products)".
 
Former Teaching Assistant, teaching "Management of Aquaculture Facilities", and, "Physiology of Nutrition" at the Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment (University of Thessaly).
 

Trainer,  in Greece (National Center for Public Administration), and abroad (having missions as EU expert in Estonia, Croatia, Serbia, Turkey, Albania, Montenegro, etc.).

My main research is on the assessment of the contribution of marine aquaculture in the development of island areas.
