Principal Investigator at the Marine Research Division of AZTI; a private research foundation, since 1985.
Over 17 years of professional experience in different lines of marine research applied to Integrated Coastal Zone Management. My current research interests are focused on Marine and Maritime Spatial Planning implementation processes, including Decision Support Tools development and implementation, mapping and assessment Coastal and Marine Ecosystem Services, and Marine Strategy Framework Directive implementation as well seabed characterization, mapping and modelling of benthic habitats.
At present, I am member of the Editorial Board of Frontiers in Marine Ecosystem Ecology Journal. I have given over 34 oral presentations in international conferences. Two PhD Thesis supervision. One of them is ongoing “Development of Decision Supporting Tools for Marine Spatial Planning Implementation”. Supervisor of eight Master Thesis since 2010.
I have been the Principal Investigator in more than 30 projects. Leader at AZTI of three European projects and coordinator of Basque country case studies within the MeshAtlantic project (Mapping European Seabed Habitat in the Atlantic area for a better marine management; INTERREG IVB), MESMA (Monitoring and Evaluation of Spatially Managed Areas; 7th Framework Programme), and AquaSpace (Ecosystem Approach to making Space for Aquaculture; H2020 Grant agreement nº 633476). I collaborated, among others in DEVOTES project (DEVelopment Of innovative Tools for understanding marine biodiversity and assessing good Environmental Status) 7th Framework Programme (Grant Agreement nº: 308392), and WESE (Wave Energy in the Southern Europe (WESE) Project funded by the European Commission. Agreement number EASME/EMFF/2017/1.2.1.1/02/SI2.787640).
